Daily Dino Fact: Poisonous Dinos

Dilophosaurus - not exactly what you saw in Jurassic Park

Dilophosaurus - not exactly what you saw in Jurassic Park

Q: Which dinosaur had the most poisonest body? -sonu_can

A: It is very unlikely that any dinosaurs actually had poison bodies, but it is possible that they used some kind of venom to kill their prey. There is very little evidence to suggest that poison was ever used, and most paleontologists remain unconvinced that they did. Dilophosaurus spitting poison in Jurassic Park was completely made up by the creators of the movie (as was the frill).

However, a couple theropod dinosaur tooth fossils have shown a groove in the tooth that could have been used to secrete poison. The modern day komodo dragon releases venom with its bite, and it is possible that dinosaurs could have done the same.

Thanks for the question sonu_can. Talk to you guys soon!

Daily Dino Fact: Don’t make fun of Stegosaurus

Thursday, July 30th, 2009
He just looks tough so you don't make fun of him

He just looks tough so you don't make fun of him

Q: What dinosaur had the smallest brain? -Pepperz

A: Poor stegosaurus. Undoubtedly one of the coolest dinosaurs to walk the earth, having plates run down its back and a spiked tail used for combat. Unfortunately, stegosaurus was probably the dumbest dinosaur of them all. Even though its body was about 9m (30ft) long and 4m (14ft) tall, the stegosaur’s brain was about the size of a walnut. It was about 3cm (1.2in) long and weighed about 75g (2.5oz).

Stegosaurus had a brain so impossibly small that most scientists believe he wouldn’t have been able to coordinate the movements of its enormous body. Instead, some paleontologists believe they had a large bundle of nerves somewhere in their body to help them with locomotion.

Daily Dino Fact: The greatest predator of them all

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Maybe he just wants a coffee?

Maybe he just wants a coffee?

Q: What was the deadliest most dangerous dino? – Destructor

A: Well Destructor, the answer to this question should be fairly obvious. It was the the Tyrannosaurus rex of course! This monstrous predator roamed all over North America in an area larger than any other predator. They were widely prevalent throughout the Cretaceous all the way up to the K/T extinction event.

The T-Rex was a fierce hunter with giant teeth (up to 30cm/11in) whose biting power was stronger than that of an alligator. A full grown Tyrannosaurus rex could easily crush a car in between its mammoth jaws. Numerous fossils of other dinosaurs have been found with crushed bones and scars from T-Rex teeth. There was literally nothing it couldn’t eat.

Now a few of have you have asked questions that we’ve answered in the daily dino fact before, so I’m giving links to them here.
