A few surprises at Flyboy’s party

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Hey gang! So I just got back from Flyboy’s party today and man was it crazy! We were all anxiously awaiting Flyboy’s arrival in Sub-Alpine forest but little did we know what was in store.

We decided to move on over to Buckland’s Peak for the partay and Flyboy told us Horns would be stopping by. Not wanting to miss the chance, we all scared Horns as soon as he got to the peak!

Horns gets quite a fright!

Horns gets quite a fright!

So yeah, Horns came by and it was totally awesome. It got even better though! Stretch and Cruiser came by to join in the fun soon after. We all headed over to Prairie Pool for a bluggin’ good time!

Horns is so bluggin'

After we partied hard in Prairie Pool, everyone split to different areas of the island and hung out all over the place! Thanks to everyone who came out today, it was such a great time!

Daily Dino Fact: And you thought Horns was hard-headed…

Q: Which dinosaur had the hardest skull? -salmonues

A: Great question! I wish I had a much better answer for you. If you had asked this about 10 years ago I could say without question that the hardest skull belonged to Pachycephalosaur. These creatures had big, round domed skulls that paleontologists used to think were used for head-butting. The myth is that these heads could absorb tremendous amounts of impact. This is no longer found to be true.

Although some of the domes are up to seven inches thick, the biological composition is different than what we used to think. The domes were actually quite porous, allowing for many blood vessels to run through it. It would have been very dangerous for a pachycephalosaur to used their heads for ramming. Still, these guys had some thick ol’ skulls so they should probably get the award for this one.

Daily Dino Fact: More dinos than you’d think

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Q: Do scientists have about an estimated amount of how many dinosaurs there were? -Flyergal

A: The only information we can truly know about how many dinosaurs there were is what we collect from fossils. Obviously, we haven’t recovered every single dinosaur that existed and our numbers are less than what actually lived. In a report released in 1990, Peter Dodson from the University of Pennsylvania estimates there were between 900-1200 genera of dinosaur present on earth during the course of the Mesozoic.

Even he admits that the number is probably smaller than the actual number, but it’s the best estimate we can give based on current data. Currently we’ve collected over 500 genera of dinosaur in addition to 100 genera (called nomen dubium) that may or may not be unique dinosaurs. There are over 100 genera of dinosaur right now waiting approval by the International Committee on Zoological Nomenclature.

Daily Dino Fact: Terrible Lizards

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Q: Where does the word “dinosaur” come from and what exactly does it mean? -Chipmunk

A: The word “dinosaur” was coined by famous English biologist and paleontologist Sir Richard Owens. The word derives from Greek δεινός (deinos) “terrible, powerful, wondrous” + σαῦρος (sauros) “lizard.” For short, it means “terrible lizard” or “fearfully great reptile.”

The word is used to describe all kinds of prehistoric reptiles, although the ones that flew and swim were not actually dinosaurs. The name indicates people’s early perception of dinosaurs as being violent and aggressive. Dinosaur bones have been found for centuries, the ancient Chinese believed they were actually the bones of dragons!
