Below I’ve listed five of the new Webosodes, although there are more where that came from. Pick the two you want to see the most. The two with the most votes by Friday morning will be selected for the party. Can’t wait!

Q: Tawa Hallae is a dinosaur scientists now know of and I wonder what family do they go in? -HornTrio

A: Great question HornTrio! For those of you who don’t know, Tawa Hallae is a carnivorous dinosaur that was recently found in New Mexico. The 213-million-year-old dinosaur existed on the great supercontinent Pangaea during the Triassic period. Several different skeletons were found but one was the most complete: a juvenile dinosaur standing about 28 inches (70 centimeters) tall and was about 6 feet (2 meters) long.

During the Triassic, at least the earlier parts, dinosaurs were essentially the same. They are said to have originated in what is now South America but was part of Pangaea at the time. Because land was one solid mass there wasn’t a whole lot of room for evolution. The discovery of Tawa Hallae points to a time where dinosaurs evolved into three different groups: sauropods, ornithischians and theropods. To answer your question specifically, HornTrio, Tawa Hallae was an early theropod – the meat eating dinosaurs.

In case you didn’t know, this Saturday is Rainforest Adoption Day. To celebrate the rainforests we’re going to throw a rainforest quiz party at 12:00 WST at the Forest Floor in the Jurassic server on Saturday.

Rainforests are a precious resource on earth holding over 50% of the world’s flora and fauna. Rainforests used to cover 14% of the earth’s surface and now the cover only 6%. Rainforest Adoption Day encourages people to give back to the rainforests and help non-profit organizations save these beautiful places.

Our quiz will be on generalized facts about the rainforest. Study what you can about them and I promise I’ll take it easy on you guys

There will be about 20 questions to answer and the first person to answer each one will get a gold Webopedia trophy! Can’t wait to see you all there and see how much you know about the rainforests.

Q: What type of mammals did we have when dinos were around? -Caden

A: That is a wonderful question, Caden. The Mesozoic was an amazing era of life. Dinosaurs became the dominant creatures, the first birds took flight and giant reptiles roamed the seas. A lot of people don’t realize that mammals even existed during this time which is incredible because 2/3 of mammalian history occurred in the Mesozoic!

Mammals of the Mesozoic weren’t the mammals that we see today, virtually all of them were very small rodents that fed on insects. One of the most common that we’ve found is a little guy called Morganucodon that was about 10cm long. He had goofy little teeth and scuttled around awkwardly on hind legs that stuck out from it’s body.

Morganucodon

The biggest mammals that were around in the Mesozoic were about as big as a medium-sized dog. Repenomamus was about 50cm (20in) long and there is good evidence that it actually fed on dinosaurs. A couple fossils have been found that contained dinosaur bones in it’s stomach.

Repenomamus

Although these guys were able to eek out a living, dinosaurs were still kings of the Mesozoic. At least we know where they got a start.

-Rex
