The Chicxulub crater, site of the asteroid impact that killed all of the dinos

The Chicxulub crater, site of the Cretaceous asteroid impact

Good day dino friends! Pterry here with some extremely exciting news for my feature column, “Pterry’s True Science.” Sometimes Rex let’s me stop by the blog to tell you about new information coming out in the world of paleontology and prehistory. This is a big one. The biggest one so far.

Recently a group of 41 paleontologists and scientists made a decision on what really caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. We’ve discussed this on the blog before and it has been one of the biggest debates about dinosaurs ever. Now it is put to rest as the universally accepted explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Their decision had a lot to do with the Chicxulub crate in Mexico and the strange iridium layer between Cretaceous and Tertiary aged rocks. The asteroid that wiped out the dinos measures abotu 7.5 miles wide and had the destructive power of a nuclear bomb (times 1 billion, literally).

Well with that debate back to rest, scientists can go back to arguing about whether or not dinos were warm blooded or cold blooded. As for me on the other hand, I’ll be arguing with Horns about who the smarter dino is. That should be an obvious one!

Bluggin’ Beach Bunker party with Pterry and Stretch - Friday

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
Come on in to the Bluggin' Beach Bunker for a bluggin' good time

A bluggin' good time awaits

Hey there VIP members! Are you ready for another awesome members-only party at the Bluggin’ Beach Bunker? This Friday Pterry and Stretch are coming to Webosaurs’ coolest club on the island to jam out to some sick tunes and munch on a little grub. Knowing Stretch, he’ll probably wander off and fall asleep in the lava pit.

We need some dinos to help cater the party and serve refreshments to the party-goers. We’re also going to need a DJ or two to spin some tracks by the dance floor.

Be there this Friday at 17:00 WST in the Jurassic server to get down at this awesome party. Stretch and Pterry are looking forward to hanging with you!

Science Party with Pterry - Saturday

Friday, February 5th, 2010

So you think you love science as much as Pterry does? Test your knowledge this Saturday at Buckland’s Peak with Pterry and a Science Quiz Party! The format is pretty simple, just like the Quiz Parties we have Primary Games. Except this time instead of dinos, Pterry will be quizzing you on different science questions to see what you know!

When: 11:00 WST

Server: Jurassic

While he won’t be unveiling all of the questions he’s asking quite yet, you can find about half of them on PERcY’s Webosaurs Blog located at this post.

The other questions will be a surprise so come prepared! We’ll be giving out WeboPedia trophies, so if you haven’t gotten one already now would be your time to do so!

Pterry’s True Science - Color in Dinosaurs

If Conan were a dinosaur...

If Conan were a dinosaur...

EUREKASAURUS! Pterry here with another edition of Pterry’s True Science! This week we have a particularly incredible discovery that I had to share with you. Rex had stated before in a Daily Dino Fact that humans didn’t know anything about the color of dinosaurs. They didn’t, until now!

For the first time ever in the history of paleontology, humans have solid evidence of dinosaur color. The evidence comes from a recent discovery of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx that was found in China. A reddish-orange color was found in the tail feathers of a recent specimen, giving scientists their first proof about pigment in dinosaurs. Artists renditions of dinosaurs have been around for a while but up until now the coloring has always been made up completely by the artist.

Sinosauropteryx was a smallish theropod who relied on eating fast little creatures (maybe rodents) for their meals. They existed during the Early Cretaceous and may have been a close relative of the Compy. This is such an exciting discovery, I wonder what they will find out next?

Pterry’s True Science: New dinosaur found in South Africa

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Hello Webosaurs crew! Pterry here and I’m back yet again with another news story for Pterry’s True Science. When we think of dinosaurs we always think of the past and things that happened long ago. However, a beautiful thing about the field of paleontology is that we are learning new things all the time. Recently, a group of paleontologists in South Africa have found a new species of dinosaur no one has ever seen before.

Aardonyx celestae was a 23 ft (7 m) long plant eater that scientists believe is a missing link in the evolution of small dinosaurs to the mammoth creatures we think of. Aardonyx celestae was likely an early sauropod who could walk on its back two legs but also drop down on all fours. As these kind of dinosaurs eventually ended up on all fours like the sauropods we know of today, the finding of this dino is extremely important to understanding their evolution.

We’re lucky to have found this dinosaur since the paleontologists were almost ready to give up digging in the area they found it!

Hope you all have enjoyed my True Science fact for today. Back to the lab for me but enjoy your time on the island.

Science party with Pterry

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Join Pterry and share your favorite science facts!

Join Pterry and share your favorite science facts!

Pterry is hosting a little open house at Dr. Nanosaurus’ lab tomorrow night (Friday, October 16th) from 17:00-19:00 WST. Come hang out with Pterry on the Cretaceous server and share your favorite science facts. Pterry, of course, is more than happy to answer any of your science questions!

Don’t worry though, it won’t be like a classroom. There will still be plenty of tooting and burping to make Pterry say “Yuckasaurus!”

Pterry’s birthday was celebrated in true style

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Pterry’s birthday was today and boy was it a memorable occasion! We had quite an extensive list of guests that came by for the festivities today. Rex came by to say hello to everyone at the beginning. Our good friend Primary Games even showed up to wish Pterry a happy birthday! Flyboy and Cruiser came in soon after, followed by Stretch.

The biggest special guest of the evening was our good buddy Pterry. He made a ton of friends once he got to the island, and he is really excited to come back for more fun times.

After partying it up at Buckland’s Peak, Stretch and Pterry headed to Webo Ridge were they totally ruled at Snowball Skirmish. I think it is safe to say that Pterry is the new Snowball Skirmish champion. He even made a trip to the laboratory to do some experimenting (but it sort of ended with an explosion).

Everyone will be happy to know that anyone who came for the party today will be receiving a Pterry birthday cake of their very own for their caves!

Thanks to all who came out, it made Pterry happy and we’re always glad to see you on the island. Until next time, keep bluggin!

Pterry’s Birthday Party - this Saturday

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

I’m guessing you already heard the rumors, but we’re having Pterry’s birthday party this Saturday! Come to Buckland’s Peak to celebrate the birthday of our favorite dinosaur inventor and genius extraordinaire. Along with Pterry himself, a bunch of his friends are coming along too. You don’t want to miss this party!

Pterry’s True Science: Tyrannosaurus Rex’s mini-me

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Good day Webosaurs, Pterry here. Just about had my latest invention all finished until Horns and Stretch fell into the lab and broke everything. Next time I’ll have both of them saying Uncle-saurus.

Anyways, got just wind of a new discovery from northeastern China. Paleontologists have just found a new dinosaur nicknamed “Raptorex,” which displayed all the same features of a T-Rex but at a fraction of the side. Raptorex stood only 9 feet tall and weighed about 143 lbs. T-Rex, in contrast, weighed about 5 tons.

Raptorex lived about 60 million years before T-Rex came about. This is an extremely exciting discovery for scientists as it gives a new link in the chain of understanding how T-Rex came to be in its evolutionary development. Strange that it would come from such a small dinosaur!

You’ll have to excuse me. Horns is sleeping now and I have a firecracker with his name on it!!

Daily Dino Fact - Pterodactyl n’est pas une Dinosaur

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Eureka-saurus, Webosaurs! I’m taking a little break from Dr. Nanosaurus’ lab to bring you your Daily Dino Fact!

Did you know that pterodactyls and pterosaurs are the same thing? And technically a pterodactyl is NOT a dinosaur. “Dinosaurs” are land vertebrates with an upright walk, while pterodactyls are flying reptiles. This flying reptile is flying back to the lab to work on more goodies for my pals. See you back on Webosaurs Island!

Bye for now!
